Skirmish in the 40k Universe - Inquisimunda and Kill Team

I've been sorting out some more of my Geek Room storage and have finally decided on which Kill Teams I'm doing using my left over CSM.

I have planned three Kill Teams, each based on one my favourite Traitor Legions: Death Guard, Iron Warriors and Word Bearers.

Some of these are already assembled, some are clipped from sprues and one even has some base colours applied(!)

Here they are:

The Putrefactors (Death Guard Kill Team)

Bubolicus the Putrefactor (aka G'gffabliodu) - Terminator Champion
Limax Flavus - Chaos Spawn
Turgentus - Plague Marine
Inpurus - Plague Marine
Ulcus - Chaos Marine
Morbus - Chaos Marine
The Infected - 5 Cultists

The Bringers of Woe (Iron Warriors Kill Team)

Futou, Disciple of Honsou - Forgesmith
Rikisen - Chosen
Fukutsu - Terminator
Saishin - Terminator
Chourai - Chaos Marine
Kaitou - Chaos Marine
Sekichou - Chaos Marine

The Sanctified (Word Bearers Kill Team)

Kor Anshar the Favoured - Aspiring Champion
Asaruludu - Chaos Spawn
Shulmanu - Possessed
Tammuz - Possessed
The Devoted - 5 Cultists

In a similar vein (well, game style at least) I have a couple of forces for Inquisimunda, an Imperial Guard force and a Eldar Corsair force.  Here's what I have:

Smethwick 19th 'The Metalheads' (Imperial Guard Kill Team)

A mix of 2nd ed metal Cadians and a few newer models, the Metalheads have an urban warfare theme.

Sergeant Metzger - Sergeant
Gunner Koch - Heavy Bolter
Gunner Neumann - Autocannon
Gunner Fleischer - Missile Launcher
Gunner Zweig - Ogryn
'Blaster' Thalberg - Plasmagun
'Eagle-Eye' Ackermann - Longlas
Private Schmitz
Private Schiffer
Private Kastner
Private Fruehauf
Private Wagner
Private Hechler
Private Dresner
Private Bach
Private Schwartz
Private Koehler
Private Freud
Private Dreschsler
Gloeckner, Sanctioned Psyker 5th Class
Der Vernichter - Sentinel

The Razor's Edge (Eldar Corsair Kill Team)

Based around my collection of RT eldar minis I've picked up on eBay over the years. I added an original Dreadnought/Wraithlord to act as a counterpoint to the Sentinel in the Metalheads.

Verthe the Razor - Leader
Zathe Fireheart - Flamer
Ryiah Starburner - Meltagun
Elion Suncaller - Plasmagun
Erinwe the Scryer - Warlock
Authole - Ranger
Ruion - Ranger
Maldir - Ranger
Arina
Calene
Seryth
Acele
Sidara
Airis
Lyis
Andir
Laenaya
Talamaeion, Vengeance from Beyond - Wraithlord/Dreadnought

Mordheim - Vladik from the North

A member of the Ungol people of Kislev, Vladik is proud of his heritage. He fights in the traditional style of the Kossar; with battle axe and bow. He has spent years in the armies of Kislev, fighting back the threat of Chaos from the Wastes.

Times are hard in Kislev and Vladik has travelled South to the Empire to seek his fortune, perhaps one day he will return to his homeland, but for now he sells his martial skills in return for gold crowns. Able to fight the enemy at both range and in close combat, Vladik is a welcome hireling to any warband that is willing to pay his fee.

The OOP Kislev range from GW has lots of cool sculpts that would look great in Mordheim warbands, or like Vladik here, as Hired Swords.

Mordheim - Zob Rockgut

Zob Rockgut always had a strong sense of wanderlust and once he'd come of age, he decided to go for a walk. A long walk. Zob kept on walking, attaching himself to various armies along the way to earn his food, and eventually found himself at Mordheim. Immediately Zob stopped walking - it seems he has found what he was looking for.

Zob's gutplate is probably the best metal effect I've ever painted!

Mordheim - Mario Idraulico

Known as the ‘Golden Brother’, since childhood Mario could do no wrong. Where his brother Luigi was scolded, he was praised; where Luigi practised his trade, Mario lounged around; when Luigi went to war, Mario courted eligible women. Through it all Mario was loved and cherished by his parents.
Mario recently married Maria Pesca, so what if she was his brother’s childhood sweetheart?
When Luigi left Tilea in a rage, Maria convinced Mario to follow him, to try to rebuild the shattered relationship between the Idraulico brothers.

I picked up two of these Tilean merc minis and couldn't resist a fun homage in their shared background!

Mordheim - La Spada

The Tilean known only as La Spada is a duellist of dark and dangerous repute. For years he plied his trade across the Old World, serving as a proxy in duels for wealthy merchants and effete nobles. Each time he won, typically cutting his opponents to ribbons in the process, and left with a pouch full of gold crowns.

La Spada thirsts for a greater challenge; the reputation of the Cursed City has attracted him, as has the stories of the skilled warriors that have gathered there. He now sells his services to whoever will pay his fee – as long as there are opponents to kill, La Spada is satisfied.

Yet another OOP Dog of War sculpt plying his trade in Mordheim!

Mordheim - Heimdall Frostcaller

Hailing from the frozen and harsh land of Norsca, Heimdall has both traded with and raided the coastal towns of the Empire and Bretonnia. Following a disastrous raid against one such town, Heimdall managed to escape into the surrounding countryside.

The Norscan joined up with a variety of Mercenary Armies, serving as a musician in one of the many Norse Berserker regiments that earn their coin fighting as Dogs of War. After proving his worth, his new leader presented him with an enchanted warhorn, the Frostcaller’s Horn. Heimdall decided not to return to Norsca with his new comrades, choosing instead to travel to the infamous city of Mordheim in search of adventure and the irresistible call of gold.

Another OOP Dog of War sculpt from GW.

Mordheim - Il Guerriero di Verezzo

The famed Champion of the fighting pits of Verezzo, master of the traditional curved sword combat style and beloved hero of hundreds of bouts. The man spoken of only as Il Guerriero is an enigma to most; he is said to never remove his helm while in the company of another.

The victim of a despicable plot within his own Pit Fighting School, Il Guerriero was sold to a wealthy traveller from the Empire to use in his own bloodsport. This traveller, an influential owner of a stable of pit fighters, has issued Il Guerriero with only one instruction; to carve a bloody path through all who stand against him. Most recently he has been pitched against the many different warriors of the Empire and beyond. These fights take place in ramshackle settlements and filthy flea-ridden pits that surround the ruins of a once-proud city, a far cry from Il Guerriero’s days in Verezzo.

Another OOP GW sculpt, this time a Chaos Thug.  The helmet style reminded me of Gladiators, so he became a Pit Fighter!

Mordheim - Fernando il Ghepardo

A Tilean mercenary pikeman, Fernando earnt his nickname from the exotic leopard skin he wears draped over his helm. He has fought in several of the famous pike regiments that serve in the many armies that wage war for the princes of his home country.

Fernando has plied his trade from Araby in the South all the way to Marienburg in the North. It was while in the port-city that Fernando was hired by a wealthy patron of a mercenary band that was headed to the city of Mordheim. Fernando, always willing to do the bidding of his paymaster, happily journeyed to that cursed place.

Fernando was one of the short-lived and sadly missed Dogs of War range.  I'm particularly proud of how his leopard fur decoration turned out.

Mordheim - Ernst Adler

The middle son of a minor noble family from Blutfurt in Ostermark, Ernst is a capable warrior who served faithfully in the bodyguard of his father for a number of years. The Adler family recently fell on hard times when their lands were attacked by a Waaagh! led by the Goblin Chief Mignob Zitnose. Waaagh! Zitnose was only repelled at great cost to the Adlers who were forced to hire a Mercenary army to assist with the defence of their lands. Ernst has become a sell-sword to help refill the family coffers, but he carries with him his hatred of the greenskins who devastated his home.

His full-plate armour, once resplendent and finely-kept, is tarnished, battered and scratched. His shield, once proudly marked with the Adler crest is gouged and scarred from countless desperate battles. Despite all this, Ernst carries himself with quiet nobility and a stoic determination.

You might not be able to make it out, but I added battle damage to poor old Ernst's armour and shield. He's really been in the wars!

Mordheim - Dieter of the Free Foresters

A member of the famed Free Foresters regiment from Stirland, Dieter is a straight-talking, straight-fighting, straight-drinking soldier of fortune. After a taxing campaign in the Southern provinces of the Empire, the Free Foresters were forced to seek worthy recruits. Dieter headed North, looking for trusty and capable men deserving of an offer to join the Free Foresters.
Dieter wields his double-handed axe with consummate ease, skill gained from many years serving as a mercenary. His gruff demeanour has gained him few friends, but he continues his search for able men to join his regiment.

OOP GW metal minis, especially from the Empire line, are perfect for Mordheim!

Mordheim - Abdul Kahar

Abdul Kahar is a famous sell-sword from the distant land of Araby. His skill with his finely crafted scimitar (known as Prophet's Will) is second to none and his ferocity in battle is matched only by his sense of honour and justice.
Such is Abdul’s tenacity and determination in battle that his comrades-in-arms are often inspired by his conduct, refusing to flee no matter how desperate the situation.

Abdul is a Reaper mini, and a really awesome, characterful sculpt! Mrs chose the colour scheme and I really like how it turned out.

As with my Sons of Hate, this project suffered with the far too close release of editions of 40k - so this will become a painting and modelling project in the main now.

The Sons of Hate

Inspired by a throw away fluff reference in a Chaos Space Marine Codex, I planned a whole Khorne-dedicated army called 'The Sons of Hate'.  Over time this project evolved a proposed Nurgle alliance of similar size, but the release of an edition of 40k less than two years after the previous one made me re-evaluate my hobby priorities.

This meant that all my 40k armies were, in essence, shelved - they won't be growing, they won't be a priority, but I won't be getting rid of them either.  They will remain in a previous edition limbo, brought onto the table whenever there's that 40k itch (although Kill Team will almost certainly see more play).

Anyway, the positive of this is that my 40k armies have become modelling and painting projects, large-scale projects for me to chip away at and do when inspiration strikes.

So, this is what I have for my Chaos Space Marine army:

HQ
Argrax Bloodspiller, Hatred Incarnate - Chaos Lord (Terminator)
The Father of Hate, Lord of the Eighth Pit - Daemon Prince
Gargorth the Ripper, Ravager of Ipari IX - Chaos Lord

Workbench Wednesday!

I'm hoping to post a Workbench pic every Wednesday - might be a WIP, might be a general workbench shot, we'll see how it goes!

This time it's the Super Dungeon Explore base set - heroes, (mid) bosses, dragonlings and spawn points. Horrible mould lines make this a bit of a drag though :/

Drivin', Nickin' and Krumpin'

Probably the craziest of the GW Specialist Games, the concept of Gorkamorka is just too fun not to do! I've only got a small collection for GoMo, just three mobs - but they all include vehicles (obviously!) which makes them a bigger project than their Necromunda or Mordheim counterparts.

Here's what I've got - I'll be posting more as I make progress:

Mobs

Da Rustbukkit Salvidge and Rekkidge Kumpanee (AKA Da Rustbukkitz) - Orks
Da Nackerz - Diggaz
Da Red Fleet - Rebel Grots

Special Character

Da Red Gobbo

Denizens of Sector B67

My second biggest collection is for another of the GW Specialist Games, Necromunda. In my youth this was without doubt my favourite game, so it didn't take much to tempt me back in upon returning to the hobby!

I've amassed a decent sized collection of the original Necromunda metals, but I've added a number of weird and wonderful minis and kitbashes to the motley crew of hired guns that ply their trade in Sector B67.

Here's my plans for Necromunda - as always, I'll share what I have done in due course and will show WIPs etc as I go.

Adventures in the Cursed City

The game which I own probably the most models for is the GW Specialist Game Mordheim.  There's something undeniably cool about bands of desperate mercenaries, cultists, zombies, ratmen and worse fighting it out over the ruins of a once prosperous city.  I've got far more warbands and hired swords than I need for Mordheim, but it's a bit of a labour of love!

Here's what I have planned - I'll post pics of those I actually have painted (yes, there are a few actually finished!) as and when time permits, and I'll post any interesting WIPs along the way too.

Official Warbands

An introduction...

My name is Alex and I love gaming... wargaming, boardgaming, card gaming, pen and paper RPGs - I'm interested in it all.

I was a big wargamer in my teens but, like so many before me, I dropped out of the hobby not long after that.  It was only when I met my (now) wife that I was encouraged to take back up the hobby I had so loved in my younger days.

So, my return began with Warhammer Fantasy, then back to 40k.  Along the way I also picked up (or picked up again) Necromunda, Mordheim and Gorkamorka. I found homebrew rulesets like Kill Team and Inquisimunda.  So many options, so many possibilities...

And then I discovered non-GW systems - you know, the ones that you only discover if you stumble across an indie game store.  I started a few things: Warmachine, Dystopian Legions, Infinity, Malifaux, MERCs and Dust.  I'm most keen on systems that don't require me to have thousands of models just to play a 'small game' - I'd rather have small forces that I can actually get painted and on the table!

Along the way I became aware of the modern boardgaming and cardgaming scenes.  I had been a big fan of Pokémon TCG in my late teens (well, just a huge Pokémon fan really) and as my wife loves Pokémon too, we were naturally drawn back into that game.  Then along came other games; Weiss Schwartz, Cardfight and MLP.  Boardgames was a little jump - when returning from holiday one year I had some left over foreign currency. After changing it and having that burning-hole-in-pocket feeling I happened to check out a game shop in Birmingham - there was Zombicide Prison Outbreak.  It was almost as if it was fate! From there the interest in games expanded - board games, deck building, non-collectable card games - too many to list!

As for RPGs, I'm a collector of the classic World of Darkness systems, 7th Sea and first and second editions Legend of the Five Rings as well as a few other bits and pieces. I don't really play RPGs these days, but I still enjoy reading through the rulebooks and expansions to immerse myself in their worlds.

I hope to use this blog to achieve a couple of aims:-

To help encourage me to paint my backlog of miniatures for all sorts of game systems.

To give me a place to share my gaming experiences and thoughts with, hopefully, people that love gaming as much as I do!
